The video game industry is booming, and there are positions available at all levels of production. One of the more popular areas of games includes video game tester jobs – a fun way to earn a living, if you talk to anyone currently in the profession. You get to play games all day, and use your knowledge and skills to critique and offer constructive criticism to make them better.

Video game tester jobs are often called quality assurance positions. They require that a gamer be well-versed in the particular genre of game being tested, and able to play at all skill levels. A tester must be able to see through a game and understand its components, and be able to break them down in order to critique them.

Often, a video game company will hire testers who understand not only games, but other software, such as Microsoft Office or operating system, as well. This is because testers may need to write reports about the games, or understand the software that they are run on.

Video game tester jobs require that testers be able to communicate to other gamers and non-gamers alike. They have to be able to verbally and through writing explain their ideas, critiques and comments to other testers, the game makers and others. Because this can be a very competitive field, this is often the aspect that sets the high earners apart from the average testers.

Along with quality assurance, there are many other video game tester jobs and related positions available in the industry. Testers will work together with other professionals in the field, and produce the best game possible.

Game testers will work with a variety of other professionals, including:

  • Sound and audio engineers
  • Texture artists
  • Concept and storyboard artists
  • Level designers
  • Programmers
  • Interface designers
  • Character animators …and more

The responsibilities of video game tester jobs all revolve around playing games. You will be in charge of playing for a specified number of hours, and searching out bugs, glitches, pathways and other aspects to report to the game developers. You will engage in a continual conversation with other creative minds in order to release a game that you can be proud to be a part of.

As a game tester, you will be part of a team that is creative, energetic and intensely passionate about gaming. This is a position that is highly interactive, as you will be playing a game, reporting your finding and playing some more, so if you love video games, you’ll be the perfect game tester.
